Income tax questions
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in FY 2026-27?
Under the new regime, a rebate brings tax to nil when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary income up to ₹12.75 lakh can be tax-free if there is no other income taxed at special rates.
What is marginal relief?
If your taxable income is just above ₹12 lakh in the new regime, marginal relief ensures the tax you pay is not more than the income above ₹12 lakh. Similar relief applies when surcharge starts at ₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore and higher thresholds.
Which deductions are allowed in the new regime?
Mainly the standard deduction for salaried people and the employer's contribution to NPS. Deductions like 80C, 80D, HRA exemption and home-loan interest on a self-occupied house are available only in the old regime.
What is health and education cess?
A 4% cess is charged on your income tax plus surcharge under both regimes.
