About KnowMyMoney

What this site does

KnowMyMoney turns an Indian CTC into an estimate of the salary that actually reaches your bank account, and compares income tax under the old and new regimes. It also includes an income tax calculator and a GST calculator.

Who it's for

Salaried people comparing job offers, preparing for a salary negotiation, or trying to understand their payslip — and anyone who wants a quick, transparent tax estimate.

How calculations work

  • Gross salary is CTC minus employer PF and gratuity (when gratuity is part of CTC).
  • PF is 12% of basic salary — on the ₹15,000 monthly wage ceiling by default, or on full basic if you choose.
  • Gratuity is estimated at 4.81% of basic (15 days' pay for every year, on a 26-day month).
  • Professional tax follows each state's schedule, capped at ₹2,500 a year. Where it varies by local body, you enter it.
  • Income tax uses the slabs, standard deduction, rebate, surcharge (with marginal relief) and 4% cess for FY 2026-27.
  • Monthly in-hand covers fixed pay; variable pay is shown separately in the annual figure.

All calculations run in your browser using the same open, tested calculation engine on every page. The rules are listed on the tax slabs page.

Our commitment to accuracy

Tax rules live in one configuration file, separate from the calculator, so each change is made once and applies everywhere. Every calculation path is covered by automated tests. We don't invent figures: where a rule couldn't be checked against an official source, we say so in the code and ask you to verify.

These are estimates, not tax advice. Your employer's payroll and your own deductions decide your final numbers.

How we update

We review the rules after each Union Budget and when states change professional tax. Tax rules were last updated on 3 October 2026. Spotted something wrong? Tell us.
